
Owls Fall Late at RV South Dakota State

BROOKINGS – The Rice women's basketball team dropped their season opener Friday night 79-65 on the road to RV South Dakota State at First Bank & Trust Arena. The Owls start the season 0-1, while the Jackrabbits move to 2-0.
Dominique Ennis led the Owls with 17 points, four rebounds and two assists, while Victoria Flores added 16 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists. Louann Battiston rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points, two assists and two steals.
As a team, Rice shot 23-of-72 (31.9%) from the floor and 6-of-23 (26.1%) from three-point range. The Owls added a 13-of-15 (86.7%) showing at the free throw line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Flores opened the game with the first points of the season with a layup plus the foul. After trading baskets, Myah Hazelton's jumper followed by a Battiston three tied the game at 14-14. Both sides were an even 16-16 at the end of the first.
Second Quarter
After the Jackrabbits built a six-point lead, Flores and Battiston got Rice within two. Another run gave South Dakota State a nine-point lead, but Ennis drilled a three and added a few more scores to get Rice within five. The Jackrabbits led 38-34 at halftime.
Third Quarter
Ennis opened the second half with a jumper, with the Jackrabbits responding with a run to go up six. Hailey Adams and Shelby Hayes hit back-to-back shots to get within two, with Flores later drilling a three to put Rice up one. Jordin Blackmon and Hazelton traded scores with the Jackrabbits, but South Dakota State built a 57-50 lead after three.
Fourth Quarter
Battiston got the scoring started in the fourth, with Ennis' three later bringing the Owls within four points. A run by the Jackrabbits put the lead to double digits, with Aniah Alexis eventually getting the deficit within seven. The Owls wouldn't get closer however, as the Jackrabbits went on to win.

Adams led the team with 11 rebounds.
Rice is now 0-2 all-time against South Dakota State.

The Owls will be on the road to face crosstown rival Houston on Tuesday night.
