
Owls Tripped Up Late by RV Princeton

PRINCETON – The Rice women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 69-56 game on the road against Princeton Wednesday night at Jadwin Gymnasium. The Owls fall to 2-2 on the season, while the Tigers move to 3-1.
Shelby Hayes led the Owls with 10 points and two rebounds, while Dominique Ennis added another 10 points, three rebounds and two assists. Hailey Adams rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
As a team, Rice shot 23-of-51 (45.1%) from the floor and 4-of-14 (28.6%) from three-point range. The Owls were 6-of-7 (85.7%) from the free throw line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Victoria Flores opened the scoring with a three-pointer, with Dominique Ennis later adding another three as Rice took a 6-3 early lead. Back-to-back Shelby Hayes scores put the Owls up seven before the Tigers snapped the run. Myah Hazelton added a score and later an and-one conversion to extend the Rice lead to six points. The Owls led 16-11 at the end of one.
Second Quarter
Princeton opened the second quarter scoring before Jordin Blackmon got Rice back on the board. Leading by four, a quick 10-0 run by the Tigers but Princeton up 26-20 midway through the quarter. Louann Battiston's three snapped the run, with Aniah Alexis' basket and another Ennis three putting Rice back in front. Rice led 34-30 at the half.
Third Quarter
Adams and Hayes traded scores with the Tigers to open the third quarter. Leading by six points, a 9-0 Tiger run gave Princeton a 45-42 lead. Adams snapped the score, scoring the next three Rice baskets. Down by one, Hayes' layup at the buzzer gave Rice a 50-49 lead at the end of three.
Fourth Quarter
A 7-0 Princeton run opened the fourth before Alexis got the Owls back on the board with a pair of free throws. Down six, Ennis sank a jumper midway through the fourth to cut the deficit to four. Another run by the Tigers sealed the game, with Ennis scoring the lone Rice basket the rest of the way.
Quick Notes
This was the first ever meeting between the two schools.
Princeton is the second team Rice has faced that is receiving votes in the national polls (South Dakota State).
