
Owls Tripped Up Late at UTSA

SAN ANTONIO – The Rice women's basketball team fell late on the road to UTSA 67-58 Wednesday night at the Convocation Center. The Owls fall to 8-7 (1-2 AAC), while UTSA improves to 13-2 (4-0 AAC).
Sussy Ngulefac led the Owls with 16 points, four rebounds, one steal and one block, while Malia Fisher added 14 points, six rebounds and two assists. Dominique Ennis rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points, four rebounds, three steals and an assist.
As a team, Rice shot 22-of-57 (38.6%) from the floor and 2-of-11 (18.2%) from three-point range. The Owls added a 12-of-16 (75%) showing from the free throw line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Fisher and Ngulefac opened the game's scoring as the Owls opened the game on an 8-0 run. After UTSA got on the board, Ennis pushed the lead back to eight points. Rice led 17-13 at the end of the first.
Second Quarter
Victoria Flores got the scoring started in the second quarter with a jumper. After the Roadrunners cut Rice's lead down to two points, Fisher, Flores and Ngulefac sparked a quick run to give Rice a 28-20 lead. After Ennis' three gave Rice a nine-point lead, a quick UTSA run brought the lead down to three. Ennis had the final basket as time expired as the Owls led 36-31 at halftime.
Third Quarter
Ngulefac extended the lead for Rice to start the second half. With UTSA within two, Hailey Adams' jumper, followed by an Ennis three-pointer, pushed Rice's lead to 43-36. Leading by six, Fisher's jumper gave the Owls an eight-point lead, with Rice eventually leading 49-43 at the end of the quarter.
Fourth Quarter
Ngulefac and UTSA traded scores early to keep the lead at six. The Roadrunners then followed with a 7-0 run to take their first lead of the night. Fisher snapped the run to put Rice back in front with 6:10 remaining. Down by three, Trinity Gooden's and-one conversion tied the game at 58-58 with 3:19 to go. UTSA closed the game on a 9-0 run to take a 67-58 win.

The Owls return home to Tudor Fieldhouse Sunday afternoon against Memphis.
