Rice hosts second invitational starting on Thursday
HOUSTON - The Rice Owls volleyball team (2-1) dropped a 3-0 decision to the 23rd-ranked Baylor Bears (4-0) on Tuesday night at Tudor Fieldhouse.
Sophomore outside hitter Cindy Tchouangwa led all players with 18 kills in the match, accounting for over half of Rice's 35 kills. She also led the Owls with a .333 hitting percentage with a minimum of five attempts.
Freshman setter Savannah Skopal continued her stellar assisting performances with another 30 assists tonight, bringing her total up to 121 in just three matches.
Fifth year libero Nia McCardell added another 16 digs to her total tonight, helping lead Rice to a total of 53 digs on the night.
Tchouagwa had a solo block while Skopal and Kaitlyn Knobbe combined for a block, giving the Owls a total of two blocks on the evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE (BAYLOR 25-20)
Errors on the service and on the attack from the Owls helped the Bears take the set, amassing large leads en route to a set one victory. The Owls did out-pace the Bears in kills, however, with 13 kills to Baylor's 10, but it was not enough as Baylor took the set 25-20.
SET TWO (BAYLOR 25-19)
The Bears took set two on the back of 14 kills and two blocks, highlighted by Elise McGhee's six kills and one solo block. Samarah Hill was effective for the Owls in the second frame, however, with four kills and 10 digs of her own, finishing the night with 20 digs and seven kills. The Owls took a 19-18 lead late in the set on a service error, but the Bears would score seven-straight to take the second set and a 2-0 lead.
SET THREE (BAYLOR 25-23)
The final set of the night saw both squads play evenly-matched and trading bows, with both finishing with 14 kills, but Baylor's edge in blocks at two blocks to one proved to ultimately be the difference, as the Bears' 25th point of the set was scored on a block from Alicia Andrew and Allie Sczech. Tchowangwa's eight kills kept the Owls within striking distance, as well as a big swing from Lademi Ogunlana to give the Owls a late 22-21 lead, but the Bears were able to find a way and take the match in three sets.
