Gannon, Metcalf Lead Owls at Gans Creek Classic
9/27/2024 11:13:00 AM | Men's Cross Country
COLUMBIA - The Rice Owls men's cross country team had a strong showing at a highly-competitive Gans Creek Classic Friday morning in Columbia, Mo. The Owls were guided behind two top-40 finishers in Gus Gannon and Elliot Metcalf to finish 16th as a team out of the 300-plus runners and 37 teams.
Post-Meet Reaction: Head Coach Jon Warren
"This was a humongous field of really good teams. Gus and Elliot ran really smart and moved up throughout the whole race. Jackson and Filippo also ran really well. Our top four were really strong, and even the fifth wasn't bad, either. Overall, we ran really well and have areas where we can improve on. It was a field of 326 athletes, it's a completely different ballgame and different from what we are used to. Top teams around the country were here today so it's good to compete against those teams. Gus and Elliot were extraordinary, both finishing in the top 40. Elliot passed a bunch of guys on the last leg too. It was a really good meet. We got what we needed out of this meet with our first 8k meet, and we got to experience a meet that wasn't overbearingly hot!"
Gannon was Rice's top finisher for the second time in as many meets this season, ending in 28th with a time of 23:50.6 for the 8k race.
Metcalf had a tremendous season debut, finishing in 37th with a time of 23:58.1. The Owls' scorers were rounded out by Jackson Moran, Filippo Aldrovandi and Ben Tijerina.
Rice will be back in action on Oct. 18 for the Arturo Barrios Invitational at Texas A&M.
