
Volleyball Drops Contest to Northern Iowa in Cardinal Classic

Owls take on UT Arlington and TCU next weekend
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Rice Owls volleyball team (4-3) fell to the Northern Iowa Panthers (5-4), 3-0, on Sunday morning at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Kentucky. The match was the final match for both teams in the Cardinal Classic.
Katrina Jensen was the led the Owls offensively with six kills in 14 attempts. Lademi Ogunlana was right behind her with five kills in 12 attempts, also. boasting the highest hitting percentage on the team with a .333 percentage (minimum five attempts).
Savannah Skopal tallied 18 assists on the day, totaling 38 during both matches of the Cardinal Classic. Kaia Mateo also added four assists, Gaby Mansfield has two, and Darby Harris had one for 25 total assists on the day for the Owls.
Mansfield started at libero for th match and tallied 15 digs, and all but three Owls who played had digs on the day. Harris (six), Cindy Tchouangwa (four), and Skopal (three) had more than two, Thea Carter and Lola Foord both had two, and Samarah Hill, Kaitlyn Knobbe, Mateo, Nia McCardell, and Ogunlana all had one.
Rice totaled three blocks on the day, with Ogunlana earning a solo block. Carter, Knobbe, Skopal, and Tchouangwa all had block assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE (UNI 25-12)
Rice took an early lead as the match began with a 3-1 advantage, but after tying the match up at 4-4, the Panthers went on a 7-1 run to take an 11-5 lead. A 3-0 Rice run cut the lead to 11-8, but an ensuing 10-2 run put the first set out of reach for the Owls at 21-10. Rice did score two quick points from kills by Jensen and Ford, but the Panthers took four-straight kills to cap off the first set at 25-12.
SET TWO (UNI 25-13)
The first half of the saw saw a very back-and-forth match between the Owls and the Panthers, with Rice taking a 8-7 lead off of a Thea Carter kill. The Panthers would then go on a 5-0 run to take a 12-8 lead before the Owls called timeout. The Owls scored three of the following four points to cut the lead to 13-11, but a 12-2 run in the second-half of the set by the Panthers would seal the 2-0 advantage in favor of UNI.
SET THREE (UNI 25-18)
While the Panthers held the lead since the 5-4 mark early in the set, the Owls never wavered and kept the match close, closing the lead to as little as 9-8. Rice also closed the gap at one point to 14-12 thanks to a Panthers' attack error, but a 6-1 run after that point brought UNI closer to match point. Rice went on a 4-1 run after that to set the score at 21-17, but the Panthers scored four of the final five points to take match point and win the match, 3-0.

The Owls will head to Fort Worth to take part in the Horned Frog Invitational next Friday and Saturday. The Owls will meet the Mavericks of UT Arlington on Friday and TCU on Saturday.
