Owls Take Second Behind Gannon’s First-Place Finish

HOUSTON - The Rice Owls men's cross country team had a great showing in the team's season debut, with three earning a top-5 finish at the 48th annual Rice Invitational Friday afternoon. Gus Gannon claimed the individual race title while the Owls finished second as a team, two points shy of first-place SFA.
Post-Meet Reaction: Head Coach Jon Warren
"As normal, I think we had a very good race. What we learned from today is that we had three guys grouped into a mix of SFA runners, and with that, all you need is one guy to move ahead, and we go from second to first. This was a great first race by this group, especially by Gus. He ran a very smart today and you could see how determined and confident he was to run down the lead runner and win the race. Jackson [Moran] and Filippo [Aldrovandi] also had a tremendous race for us. Overall, a good opening race for this group."
Gannon paced the Owls with a time of 15:34.10 for the 5200m race to claim his first career race title for cross country. Jackson Moran and Filippo Aldrovandi were close behind, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.
Brandon Martz finished 13th with Will McDermott rounding out the top five Rice finishers in 19th.
The Owls will be back in action on Sept. 27, at the Gans Creek Classic at the University of Missouri.
