
Owls Dominate Texas State to Cap Weekend at 2-0

The Bobcats were receiving Top 25 votes coming into the weekend
HOUSTON - The Rice Owls volleyball team made quick work of the Texas State Bobcats, sweeping the competition to improve to 2-0 on the season and close out the Rice Invitation I in convincing fashion.
Offensively, Lademi Ogunlana continued her impressive start to the season with a .533 hitting percentage and tied with Samarah Hill for the most kills on the Owls with 10 on the day. Ogunlana finished with a total of 11 points for the second-most on the Rice team, 1.5 behind Hill, who led the Owls with 12.5 points.
Kaitlyn Knobbe and Lola Foord ended the day with 4.0 blocks, keeping the Texas State offense quiet. Savannah Skopal was big for the Owls on the day, leading all players with 34 assists, 14 more than the next-leading player in the game.
Nia McCardell and Cindy Tchowangwa showed off their range on the floor with 11 digs each, not letting anything get by them and keeping the ball alive for the Owls.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET
Everything was clicking for the Owls to open the game, posting an impressive .407 team hitting percentage while keeping the Bobcats to a .000 percentage. The Owls took advantage of seven attacking errors and two service errors from the Bobcats to take a 25-14 decision to open the contest.
SECOND SET
Rice posted a match-high .483 hitting percentage to keep the onslaught going, which included two service aces. The Owls limited mistakes as well, only giving up a single attack error to Texas State's six, taking control of the second set early. After two sets, Rice led 2-0 with an opportunity at its first sweep of the season.
THIRD SET
Despite going down by as much as nine points, the Bobcats never stood down and kept fighting back, but the Owls would find a way to put the Bobcats away late with the final kill of the game by Hill. Three service aces helped the Owls get past the Bobcats, winning by three in the final set to solidify its first sweep of the season.
