2024 All-Texas College team
Houston- Running back Dean Connors and punter Conor Hunt have been named to Dave Campbell's Texas Football All-Texas College second team. The list will be included in the venerable publication's 2024 edition.
Connors enjoyed a breakout season in 2023, leading the Owls in rushing (771 yards), rushing touchdowns (7), and all-purpose yards (1,189) while also catching 43 passes for 403 yards and three scores. His average of 6.4 yards per carry was the highest for a Rice running back with at least 100 carries since Thomas Lott Jr. averaged 6.4 in 2005 (140/902). He closed the season strongly, rushing for 591 yards on 80 carries over his last seven games, and scored a pair of touchdowns in the First Responder Bowl, the first Owl with multiple rushing touchdowns in a bowl game since Dicky Maegle in the 1954 Cotton Bowl. His 80-yard catch and run from JT Daniels at USF was the longest pass reception by a Rice running back since Chase Clement and Quinton Smith combined on an 80-yard scoring play vs. Houston in 2006.
Hunt has handled all the Owls' punting chores since he transferred from Georgetown before the 202 season. He has averaged 40.1 yards on 103 punts in his first two years as an Owl. He had a career-high six punts of better than 50 yards last season while also taking over as the holder on all the Owls' placekicks.
Connors and Hunt were teammates for one season at Hawai'i Prep in Kamuela, Hawai'i, in 2019 before Hunt graduated and signed with Georgetown and Connors transferred to California for his senior year of high school.
The Owls open their 2024 season by hosting Sam Houston on August 31 at Rice Stadium, with kickoff set for 6 p.m.
