
Fisher, Jackson Earn Hackerman Award; Named Co-MVPs

HOUSTON – Rice women's basketball junior Malia Fisher and fifth-year senior Destiny Jackson were named team co-MVPs, both earning a share of the Hackerman Award, Shelley Pennington and Friends Head Coach Lindsay Edmonds announced.
The Hackerman Award is awarded to the team MVP of the season and has been awarded each year since 1979. This is Jackson's third time being named MVP, the sixth athlete in program history to be awarded the honor three or more times. This is Fisher's first time being named MVP.
This marks the fifth time the award was split between co-MVPs and the first time since the 2010 season, when Jackie Stanley and D'Frantz Smart were awarded the honor.
An All-AAC Third Team selection this season, Fisher averaged 13.1 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game, leading the Owls in each category. During the AAC Tournament, Fisher averaged 14.5 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game, earning All-Tournament MVP honors and leading the Owls to the AAC Championship, securing the fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in program history.
Fisher recorded her 1,000th career point in the NCAA Tournament at LSU, becoming the 26th athlete in program history to reach the milestone. Earlier this season, Fisher dropped a career-high 30 points with 12 rebounds at UTSA. She followed that performance with 20 points in the AAC Second Round game against UAB.
Jackson was the only Owl to appear in all 34 games this season, averaging 11.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.6 steals per game. During the AAC Tournament, she averaged 14.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 4.0 steals and 1.2 blocks per game, earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Jackson recorded her 1,000th career point at South Florida, becoming the 25th athlete in program history to reach the milestone and first in the Edmonds era.
Jackson led the team in points (385), field goals made (141), assists (119), assists per game (3.5), steals (55), free throws made (87), free throw percentage (.829), minutes played (975) and assist/turnover ratio (1.53). Jackson closed her Rice career being ranked first in games played (142), sixth in assists (416), ninth in steals (176) and 13th in scoring (1,141).
