
Women's Tennis Posts 5-2 Home Win Over Louisiana Tech

HOUSTON, Texas — Rice women's tennis won, 5-2, over Louisiana Tech on Sunday in the team's first match of the season at the George R. Brown Tennis Center. The Owls improved to 2-4 on the season with the victory.
Doubles: The Owls claimed the doubles point with wins at each of the top two positions of the lineup. At the first court, graduate senior Chie Kezuka and senior Federica Trevisan controlled their match en route to a 6-2 victory. Junior Saara Orav and sophomore Darya Schwartzman then won, 6-3, at the second position to put the Owls up, 1-0. Freshmen Divna Ratkovic and Nithesa Selvaraj fought to a 4-4 tie at the third position at the time the point was clinched.
Singles: A trio of straight-set victories spurred Rice on to clinch the match before surrendering a point to the Bulldogs. Schwartzman scored her second victory of the day with a 6-1, 6-3 win at the second position. Ratkovic match the victory at the third position, also winning, 6-1, 6-3. Orav then clinched the team victory with her second win of the day as well, winning at the fifth position, 6-4, 6-2. Playing all matches to completion, Kezuka became the third Owl to score multiple wins on the day with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win at court four.
Head coach Elizabeth Schmidt: "A good, solid team win today. Things that we've been working on in practice, I saw our players implementing them and working on implementing them. I think that La Tech made us go and earn it and we earned it. Now we'll take what we did in this match and continue to get ready as we go into our next match against Texas A&M next weekend."
Up Next: The Owls face off against in-state rival Texas A&M on Sunday, Feb. 18, at noon in College Station. The Aggies were ranked ninth in the nation in the latest ITA rankings.
