COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Rice women's tennis fell to No. 11 Texas A&M, 7-0, on Sunday at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
Doubles: The Owls fought valiantly in doubles but ultimately fell on courts one and three to deliver the doubles point to the Aggies. At the second court, junior Saara Orav and freshman Anushka Ashar battled to a 5-4 deficit at the time the point was clinched. Facing the nation's third-ranked doubles team at the first position, senior Federica Trevisan and graduate senior Chie Kezuka clawed their way to a deciding point with a chance to tie the match at 3-3 before a return was called wide, giving the Aggie duo a 4-2 lead on the way to a Texas A&M win.
Singles: Facing nationally-ranked opponents at the top three positions in singles play, the Owls wrestled for points at every spot but ultimately fell short of grabbing a point in the match. At the first position, Trevisan pushed the country's No. 1-ranked singles player in a tightly contested two-set match. Freshman Divna Ratkovic bounced back from a first-set loss to force a third set against the 32nd-ranked singles player in the nation. At court three, Kezuka also pressured the country's No. 24-ranked singles player in a two-set match. Orav forced a first-set tiebreaker at the fourth position but was unable to score the breakthrough point for the Owls.
Head coach Elizabeth Schmidt: "Obviously, A&M is a top-15 team and I think they showed that to us today. They were able to set a goal and keep their foot on the accelerator the whole match. I thought we played tough and well in spots. We just need to be able to do that a little bit more consistently on all six courts to be able to go out and pull off an upset against a team like that."
Up Next: The Owls return home for a pair of matches at the George R. Brown Tennis Center next weekend. Rice will host UTSA on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 11 a.m. (CT), before facing off against No. 16 San Diego on Sunday, Feb. 25, at 11 a.m. (CT).
