
Rice Falls at Texas State

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Rice men's basketball team kept pace with Texas State, but could not get over the hump, eventually falling, 75-66, Sunday afternoon at Strahan Arena. Rice falls to 7-3, while Texas State improves to 7-3.
The Story
Rice jumped out to an early 8-2 lead. However, it missed seven of its next nine shots as Texas State went on a 12-1 run. The teams went back-and-forth, but Coleton Benson made three straight threes to give the Bobcats its largest lead of the half, 25-16, with 6:16 to play in the half. Jacob Dar hit Rice's first three of the game, and Caden Powell made a pair of free throws. After trading baskets, Texas State scored five straight points to regain its nine-point advantage, 32-23, with 3:47 remaining. Rice scored five of the next six points. After an Austin Green layup, Andrew Akuchie made one-of-two free throws. Rice then got a stop, and Denver Anglin went the length of the court, beating the buzzer with a jumper to send the Owls into halftime trailing, 35-31.
Texas State opened the second half with a jumper. Powell then got a tip-in and Kellen Amos hit a three. The Bobcats pushed their lead back to six, but a 7-2 Rice run was capped by a Denver Anglin three to pull within 44-43 with 13:20 to play. After TSU made two free throws, the teams traded baskets over the next 3:36. Texas State scored six of the next eight points. Alem Huseinovic made two free throws, but Tylan Pope converted a three-point play. Trae Broadnax made one-of-two free throws but Tyrel Morgan made a layup and Drue Drinnon hit a three to extend Texas State's lead to 64-56 with 3:56 to play. Rice got no closer than five points the rest of the way.
