
Owls Power Past UAB to Advance to AAC Semifinals

LAKEWOOD RANCH – The fourth-seeded Rice soccer team used two late goals to snap a three-game losing skid and defeat fifth-seed UAB 2-0 Monday night in the AAC Tournament quarterfinal round in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. With the win, the Owls move to 12-5-2 on the season, while UAB falls to 7-5-5.
How It Happened
The Blazers applied pressure early, recording the first on-target shot 16 minutes into the match, but Faith Hutchins made an easy save to keep things scoreless. Leah Chancey followed with a shot on goal of her own but couldn't get past the Blazer keeper. Both sides went into the half scoreless.
It wasn't until the 71st minute of the match that Sophie Zhang was able to snap the scoreless tie and give the Owls a late 1-0 advantage. Minutes later, Jules Johnston doubled the lead off passes from Allie Love and Dayo Tennyson. Rice's defense held the rest of the way to advance to the semifinal round of the AAC Tournament.
