Owls Fall in AAC Semifinal to No. 19 Memphis

LAKEWOOD RANCH – The Rice women's soccer team tied the match early in the second half, but ultimately fell short in the AAC Semifinal to No. 19 Memphis 3-1 Thursday night in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.
How It Happened
After fending off Memphis shots early, Leah Chancey got the Rice offense rolling with a shot from the top of the box that found the open arms of the Tiger keeper. Memphis struck for the game's first goal minutes later to take an early lead. The Tigers looked to double their lead in the 23rd minute, but Faith Hutchins made the save to keep the deficit at one. Monday's hero Sophie Zhang had the last offensive chance of the half, but her shot was blocked at the Owls trailed 1-0 at the half.
Camille Quarterman looked to tie the match in the early minutes of the second half, but once again, the Tigers made the defensive stop. Shortly after, Catarina Albuquerque's corner kick found the head of Natalie Gorji, who sent the ball into the back of the net to tie the match in the 57th minute. The Tigers took the lead back for good shortly after with two goals.
