
Rice Rallies, Takes Down Wichita State to Improve to 4-0 in AAC Play

WICHITA, Kan. – Rice (9-4, 4-0 AAC) hit at a .378 clip in the final three sets, including .484 in the final two sets, to topple the Wichita State Shockers (8-8, 3-1 AAC) on Sunday afternoon at Charles Koch Arena.
Samarah Hill turned in another outstanding performance with her second-consecutive double-double, posting a season-high 18 kills and 15 digs just after a performance against Tulsa with a career-high 24 digs. Other Owls with double-digit kills were Cindy Tchouangwa with 15 and Lademi Ogunlana with 10. Katrina Jensen was a force late in the match for the Owls, hitting .600 with seven kills, the highest hitting percentage for the Owls on the day.
Savannah Skopal added 39 more assists to her tally to lead the Owls on assists for the day, while Darby Harris tallied another 13 to account for 52 of the Owls 62 assists.
Gaby Mansfield had a career performance with 31 digs, beating her previous career-high of 19 which was tied against Tulsa. Mansfield also had three assists and a service ace. Nia McCardell also had 12 digs on the day, inching closer to 2,000 for her career, needing 65 more to mark the achievement.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE (RICE 25-23)
The Shockers fought to take an early 6-3 lead, but Rice's immediate 5-0 run erased the lead and never saw the Owls trail for the remainder of the set. Rice's lead was as much as four at multiple points with 12-8, 16-12, and 17-13 leads, but Wichita State hung around with the Owls, tying the match at 20-20. For every point Rice scored from that point, the Shockers responded, until back-to-back kills by Ogunlana and Lola Foord at 23-23 secured the set at 25-23 for Rice.
SET TWO (WICHITA STATE 25-18)
The Owls and the Shockers traded punches through the beginning of the set, but the latter began to pull away toward the middle part of the set after taking a 10-7 lead. Wichita State held anywhere from a three- to six-point lead over Rice towards the end of the set, leading by as much as seven at 21-14, and clinched the set with a 25-18 final.
SET THREE (WICHITA STATE 25-22)
Wichita State rushed out to a 4-0 lead to force Rice to take an early timeout, and added to the lead to stay on top as the two reached the middle point of the set. Rice began to rally, but every time the Owls tied it, the Shockers would respond in kind to regain the lead. After cutting the lead to 14-13, Wichita State would outscore Rice 6-3 to jump ahead 10-16. Rice fought back and tied the set up at 21-21, but the Shockers scored four of the final five points to take the set and a 2-1 advantage.
SET FOUR (RICE 25-15)
It was Rice's turn to be the dominate team as the Owls caught fire beginning in the fourth set. Rice never trailed and never saw the set tied after 1-1, building as large as a 21-8 lead before Wichita had any sort of rally begin. However, it was too little, too late, for the Shockers, as Rice easily clinched the set with three of the final four points of the set after a WSU three-point run.

Rice took control of the final set early, building a 7-3 lead to force Wichita State to take an early timeout. While the Shockers responded with a three-point run, Rice would only give up four points the rest of the way and outscore Wichita State 8-4, clinching its second 3-2 victory in conference and its fourth victory in a row.
