HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE (RICE 25-19)
Rice set the pace early by taking a 6-2 lead in the dawn of the first set, but the Mean Green were able to fight back to tie the match up at 8-8 before too long. A 4-0 run by Rice forced a North Texas timeout, but Rice continued to create separation with a 3-0 run immediately out of the timeout. North Texas closed the gap to as little as three points multiple times, but the Owls were able to get timely kills to stay ahead of the attempted rally by UNT. The Owls were able to claim the set thanks to a service error by the Mean Green.
SET TWO (RICE 25-16)
UNT was able to come out with a little bit of aggression with early 5-4 and 7-5 leads, but Rice would take the lead at 10-7 after a 5-0 run, and never let the Mean Green tie the set after that point. UNT would close the gap at 12-11, but that was a close as they would get. Rice would outscore North Texas 13-5 for the remainder of the set, including going on three separate 3-0 runs to claim the set and a 2-0 advantage going into the intermission.
SET THREE (RICE 25-19)
The third and final set of the night saw five ties at early parts of the set, but the Owls never trailed. After the 7-7 tie, Rice never allowed UNT to rally and tie the match, outscoring the Mean Green 10-2 in the middle part of the set to take a 17-9 lead and pushing towards a straight set victory. North Texas would not go quietly and managed to close the gap to four points at 23-19, but two errors, a service error and a long attack, would seal the match up for Rice.
