Arthus de la Bassetiere wins finals in men's backdraw bracket
HOUSTON - Rice sophomore Divna Ratkovic defeated Leonie Moeller of Memphis, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 in a nearly three-hour battle to claim the inaugural American Athletic Conference Women's Singles Individual Championship in the AAC Men's and Women's Individual Campionship hosted by Rice University.
"I was tired," said Ratkovic when asked about the length of the match, "but I stayed mentally tough and tried not to think about it. I had my team and coaches, including E [Elizabeth] on the court, and they all supported me a lot. I also want to thank all of the fans who came to watch, they just gave me the strength to believe in myself, and that's what brought me here. That's why I won."
Ratkovic, the four seed, earned a first-round bye and won four-straight matches to take home the title. She defeated two seeded opponets along the way, including sixth-seeded Ana Paula Naranjo Martinez from Tulsa on Friday and second seeded Moeller in the championship.
By winning the championship, Ratkovic has earned the right to represent Rice and the AAC in the ITA Conference Master's in Rome, Georgia, starting on November 7.
Happening at the same time on court four was the men's backdraw finals, where Arthus de la Bassetiere emerged victorious over Luc Hoeijmans of Tulane, defeating him in three sets by a final score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
De la Bassetiere fell in the opening round of the tournament, but then won three-straight matches to win in the finals of the men's backdraw bracket. De la Bassetiere defeated one seeded opponent to advance, which was Memphis's Harry Rock on Friday, who was seeded seventh in the men's bracket.
In total, the Owls earned 13 victories over the course of the previous four days.
The men's tennis team is back in action from Nov. 1 - 3, heading to Princeton, New Jersey, to compete in the Princeton Invitational, while the women's team will have several events running concurrently. Ratkovic will compete at the ITA Conference Master's from Nov. 7 - 10, while the ITA Sectionals will be played at the same time. Women's tennis is also hosted the Rice Invitational during those same dates.
