Pair of Owls Advance to Quarterfinals in AAC Men's and Women's Individual Championships

HOUSTON - Two Owls advanced to the quarterfinals after the first two rounds in day one of the American Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Individual Tennis Championship hosted at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Thursday.
In the round of 32, Emir Sendogan and Darya Schwartzman were the first two Owls in action on the day, with Sendogan building early leads in both sets he competed in, but ultimately falling to Miminovic from UTSA by a final line of 6-3, 6-4 to move into the consolation bracket. Schwartzman, on the other hand, dominated her opponent from the jump, defeating Frasser from Temple, 6-2, 6-0.
To conclude play in the round of 32, Arthus de la Bassetiere took on Jenicek from Florida Atlantic, battling in a tight first set before falling 7-5, then fell in the second set 6-2 to fall into the consolation bracket.
In the round of 16, Schwartzman was the first Owl to finish her match, coming out on top in a back-and-forth three set battle. After taking the first set in dominating fashion at 6-1, Rowinska fought back to take the second set at 6-4. The two were locked at a stalemate at 4-4, but Schwartzman powered through to take the third set at 6-4 and advance to the quarterfinals.
Also in the round of 16, Divna Ratkovic sealed her spot in the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 victory. After two tight sets to start her afternoon, Ratkovic dominated in the final set to continue her time in the tournament.
Both Rice tandems, the women's tandem of Fernanda Martinez and Schwartzman, as well as the men's tandem of de la Bassetiere and Kabeer Kapasi, will open competition on Friday in the doubles brackets.
Action will continue tomorrow, Friday, October 25, with the quarterfinals of both men's and women's doubles, as well as the quarterfinals of men's and women's singles.
