COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Rice fell to TCU, 4-1, in the opening round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Saturday at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
Doubles: The Horned Frogs jumped out to the early lead with wins at the top two positions of doubles play. Junior Saara Orav and freshman Anushka Ashar were trailing, 6-5, in a tight match at the third spot at the time of clinch.
Singles: In singles play, TCU moved to a 3-0 lead with wins at the fourth and sixth positions. The Owls battled back at the remaining courts to tighten the match. Senior Federica Trevisan won at the No. 1 position, 6-1, 6-4, to put Rice on the board. Another TCU win at the second position then clinched the match for the Horned Frogs. At the time the match was clinched, Orav led, 7-6 (6), 5-4 at the fifth position, while freshman Divna Ratkovic was tied at one point apiece in the third set at court three.
Head coach Elizabeth Schmidt: "Every team in the ITA Kickoff is good so we knew it would be a tough fight today. TCU came out firing in doubles and had a much better start than us which ultimately helped them get the doubles point. In singles, getting down 3-0 pretty quickly was tough but our team continued to fight their hearts out and not only just kept us in the match but made it a real battle that could have gone either way. I believe we grew as a team today and now we will get ready for another hard-fought match tomorrow."
Up Next: The Owls will play Northwestern tomorrow, Sunday, January 28, at noon, as part of ITA Kickoff Weekend.
