AAC Opener
The Owls will have their debut in the American Athletic Conference on Thursday night when the team welcomes SMU to Holloway Field. It will be Student Appreciation Night/Whoo Crew Night with the first 50 students and first 50 fans receiving a Rice flag.
Last Time Out
Rice dropped a home contest to Texas A&M 4-0 last Sunday night. The Owls were out-shot 23-7 in the match.
A Tough Road Ahead
Rice will face several opponents in 2023 that are either ranked or receiving votes in the current United Soccer Coaches poll. The Owls will face No. 17 Xavier and RV SMU this week while also facing No. 14 Memphis. Rice also faced No. 15 Texas this season.
Rice vs. SMU
This will be the 23rd meeting between the Owls and Mustangs, the second most meetings for Rice against a single opponent (UTEP, 24). The Owls are 6-14-2 all-time against SMU and are 0-5-1 against the Mustangs in the last six meetings. Rice is 3-5-1 against SMU at home.
Weekly Honors (8-28)
Halseth was named to the AAC Weekly Honor Roll after a six-point performance recording a goal and assist against both Texas Southern and Northwestern State. Halseth scored the game-winning goal against the Tigers while assisting on the game-winning goal against the Demons.
New Season, New Conference
The 2023 season marks Rice's inaugural season in the American Athletic Conference (AAC). Rice was one of six schools (Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, UAB and UTSA) to join the conference for this season. Rice is coming off a regular season title in C-USA after posting a 9-0-1 conference record last year.
Three Owls Tabbed for Preseason Honors, Owls Picked Fourth in AAC West
Catarina Albuquerque, Mikala Furuto and Sarah Piper all earned preseason accolades by being named to the AAC Preseason Watch List. Furuto was also selected to the 2022 Second Team All-Conference USA last season. Rice was selected to finish fourth in the AAC West division behind AAC favorite Memphis, SMU and North Texas. UTSA and Tulsa rounded out the last two spots in the poll.
