How It Happened
The Mustangs quickly jumped in front, scoring five goals in the first 22 minutes of the match. After goals from Emma Alvord, Nyah Rose and Eliana Salama put SMU up 3-0, a pentaly kick goal from Mayu Inokawa extended the lead to 4-0 at the 17:10 mark. Rose capped off the run with her second goal of the game, give SMU a 5-0 lead just over the 22-minute mark. Ellen Halseth got Rice on the board with a header off a pass from Natalie Gorji with just over 15 mintes left in the first half. SMU answered back again to take a 6-1 advantage in the 39th minute. Rice struck right back with a penalty kick goal from Catarina Albuquerque, her first goal of the season, to make it 6-2 SMU at halftime.
The Owls continued to chip away with Halseth taking the ball away from a defender in the attacking third for a one-on-one chance with the goalie, with Halseth winning the battle and finding the back of the goal for her second goal of the game. Naija Bruckner had a chance to get Rice even closer with 10 minutes left, but her shot went right into the arms of the SMU keeper, as the Mustangs fended off Rice's rally attempt for a 6-3 victory.

The Owls will wrap up their homestand on Sunday, when the team welcomes No. 17 Xavier to Holloway Field at 1 p.m.
