
Owls Drop Home Opener to Houston

HOUSTON – The Owls struck first, but the Houston Cougars came away with a 2-1 victory at Holloway Field Thursday night in Rice's first home match of the 2023 season. Rice falls to 2-3 on the season.
How It Happened
Both sides got quality shots off early, with Sarah Piper having a shot saved nine minutes into the match. A few minutes later UH tried to get a shot past the Rice defense, but Ann Stephanie Fortin was right there to scoop the ball up. Ellen Halseth got the offense to strike first after sneaking past multiple defenders for a goal off a pass from Naija Bruckner at the 17:28 mark. The Owls had a chance to double the score a minute later, but Mia Brumlow's shot couldn't get by the Cougars keeper. Both side traded shots until Cameryn Maddox broke past the Owl defense to even the game at 1-1 with five minutes left in the half.
Maddox opened the second half right where she left off in the first, scoring her second goal of the game three minutes into the second half to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead. The Owls had multiple chances in the 60th minute, with Kallie McKinney's shot being saved in front of Bruckner, who had a chance on the rebound, but her shot was blocked by a defender. Rice continued to apply pressure on the Houston defense, but the Cougars prevailed, holding on to the 2-1 victory.

Rice is back on the road for their next two matches, with the first stop at Loyola (MD.) on Sunday, Sept. 3 at 11 a.m.
