Annual all-star game to be played on February 4, 2024
JT Daniels, Luke McCaffrey, and Josh Pearcy have been named to the 11th Annual Reese's Senior Bowl Watch List as announced by the annual all-star game's scouting staff on Wednesday.
The initial watch list was created after tape-based evaluations of all college players who are either 2019 high school graduates or true four-year players (with five or more games played in three previous seasons). This list does not include many true or redshirt juniors who could become eligible as December 2021 (or earlier) graduates.
This year's game will be played on February 4, 2024, at Hancock Whitney Stadium on the campus of South Alabama University in Mobile which also hosted the Owls last year for the Lending Tree Bowl.
Daniels is in his first year with the Owls after ranking third in the Big XII by averaging 20 completions per game last year at West Virginia. He has thrown for 6,947 yards and 45 touchdowns while completing 63% of his passes in 32 collegiate games. He was also named to the preseason watch list for both the East-West Shrine Bowl and the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award.
McCaffrey blossomed in his first year as a wide receiver for the Owls in 2022, leading the Owls with 58 receptions. He was second on the team with 723 yards (ninth-most in school history), six touchdowns, and 65.7 yards per game, while recording 12.5 yards per catch. He also recorded three 100-yard games.
Pearcy is coming off a breakout season in 2022 in which he led the Owls with 10 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks while starting all 13 games. Two of his sacks on consecutive plays in the final minute vs. UAB to preserve the Owls' 28-24 win. He dropped Dylan Hopkins and forced a fumble for a loss of seven on second down with less than a minute to go and then dropped Hopkins again for a loss of four as time ran out. The captain of Rice's special teams, Pearcy led the team with six tackles on kick coverage. He was named to the watch list for the Lombardi Award earlier in August.
All three Owls on the list were named captains of the 2023 team earlier this week.
The initial Senior Bowl watch list is just a starting point. Senior tape is the most critical criterion in the selection process and every senior will be re-evaluated based on their tape this fall.
The Reese's Senior Bowl is the longest continual-running all-star game and has been played in Mobile, Alabama the past 74 years. More than 900 NFL personnel, including key decision-makers from all 32 teams, and over 1,100 media members from around the country were credentialed last year. In each of the past three years, the Reese's Senior Bowl has had 100 or more players drafted and over 40 percent of the entire draft class, the most for any postseason all-star game.
Rice opens its 2023 football season one week from Saturday when the Owls travel to Austin to face Texas at 2:30 p.m. with national coverage provided by FOX.
