SAN ANTONIO – The Rice soccer team dropped a tough 2-0 decision on the road to Incarnate Word in the 2023 season opener Thursday night at Gayle & Tom Benson Stadium.
How It Happened
The Owls had a chance early in the match to strike first, with Catarina Albuquerque rattling off a shot in the opening minutes, however UIW keeper Makenzie Hall was right there for the save. Both sides traded possessions without being able to muster together offense until Sierra Wannamaker capitalized on a Rice miscue to give Incarnate Word a 1-0 lead at the 21:32 mark. The Owls trailed 1-0 at the half.
Coming out the half tailing by one, Piper Biziorek had a chance to even the score, but her shot couldn't get past the UIW defense. Minutes later the Cardinals looked to add to their lead, but a leaping Ann Stephanie Fortin just was able to get a piece of the ball to send it sailing high to keep the deficit at one. Shortly after, at the 56' mark, the Cardinals struck for another goal to double their lead to 2-0.
Rice had several opportunities down the stretch, but Hall was all over in goal making several saves to keep the Owls from scoring and give Incarnate Word the win.
