Winner announced in Tyler on January 10, 2024
Rice quarterback JT Daniels has been named to the watch list for the 11th annual Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award which was announced on Thursday.
Daniels is in his first year with the Owls after ranking third in the Big XII by averaging 20 completions per game last year at West Virginia. He has thrown for 6,947 yards and 45 touchdowns while completing 63% of his passes in 32 collegiate games. He was also named to the preseason watch list for the East-West Shrine Bowl.
A total of 60 players from 10 conferences and one independent make up this year's watch list, including UTSA's Frank Harris, who was a finalist for the award last year. The field will be cut to 16 semifinalists in November and then to five finalists in December who will be brought to Tyler for the announcement of the 11th winner at a banquet scheduled for January 10, 2024.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community, and tenacity; specifically, tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals. In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or currently playing at Texas D1 four-year college.
Daniels and the Owls will open their 2023 season on September 2 on the road in Austin against Texas. Game time is set for 2:30 and FOX will broadcast the game nationally. Rice opens its home season at 6 p.m. on September 9 when the Owls host Houston for the 42nd Bayou Bucket with coverage provided by the NFL Network.
The Bayou Bucket will be the first of seven home games for the Owls, their most extensive home slate since hosting seven in 1990.
