Rice senior safety Chike Anigbogu is one of 136 college football players who have been nominated for the 2023 Allstate American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team. ®
Established in 1992, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team is one of the most coveted community service awards in college football. From the 135 nominees, the final roster of 23 award recipients will bring together 11 players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision; 11 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III, and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA); and one honorary head coach. To be considered for a spot on the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, each player must be actively involved with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining strong academic standing.
Anigbogu is one of the most active members on the Owls football team. He volunteers at the Houston Food Bank, serves on the College Career Readiness Panel at Westbury Highschool, and is the Rice Football representative on Rice's SAAC chapter. He was a participant in the Rice Athletics Mental Health Awareness Campaign and the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Campaign. He is a member of the Rice Black Student Association, Rice Owls of Color United, and the Rice African Student Association. He also works as a volunteer youth football coach and was a five-time C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll honoree.
On the field, Anigbogu played in all 13 games last year and led the team with 269 special teams snaps. He also played in all 13 games in 2021 and in 2020 saw action in all five games and was named the defensive player of the game in the Owls' win at Southern Miss.
The final 22-member team and honorary coach are selected by a voting panel of former Allstate AFCA Good Works Team members, current and former head coaches and journalists. They look for exceptional leadership on and off the football field. Driphus Jackson of Rice was a member of the 2015 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.
After the final team members are announced in September, fans can vote for this year's Allstate AFCA Good Works Team captain through the official page on ESPN.com/allstate. Fans can join the conversation on social media with #GoodWorksTeam throughout the season.
