Owls and Longhorns kickoff at 2:30 on September 2
Rice will kick off its 2023 football season in front of a national television audience as the Owls' opener at Texas on September 2 has been picked up by FOX Sports and will kick off at 2:30 (central) as announced on Wednesday by the Big XII Conference.
The American Athletic Conference, which welcomes Rice as a new member this season, also announced a number of kickoff times and television designations for the 2023 football season on Wednesday.
Rice's road game at Tulsa on Thursday, October 19, is set for a 6 p.m. start and will be carried on either ESPN or ESPN2. The Owls' home game with Texas Southern on September 16 will kick off at 6 p.m. and be broadcasted on ESPN+.
ESPN and The American will announce the remaining assignments for the first three weeks of the season, including the Owls' week two Bayou Bucket battle with Houston, later this week.
This will mark the first time Rice Football has appeared on FOX Sports since the network began televising in-season college football in 2007. The afternoon start will be the first between Rice and Texas in Austin since 1998.
The schools are meeting in their season opener for only the third time since the series began in 1914. They opened the 2010 season with an afternoon contest at NRG Stadium in Houston and then the following year with a 7 p.m. kickoff in Austin.
