2023 All-Conference USA Men’s Tennis Team
Wes Barnett and Trinity Grear have been named to the 2023 All-Conference USA Men's Tennis Team in a vote of league coaches.
Grear was named to the singles second team and joined with Barnett in earning second-team honors in doubles. This is the first all-conference selection for both Owls.
After 2022 C-USA Freshman on the Year Haoyuan Huang was lost before the season with an injury and newcomer Yasha Zemel was hurt early in the spring season, Grear was moved to the first line in singles. He was 8-10 on the season, including a 3-6 mark in his first action at the first line. He clinched Rice's first win over a ranked team since 2017 with a 7-0 effort in a third-set tiebreak at #68 New Mexico and collected his first win over a ranked opponent when he bounced back from a 10-8 tiebreak loss in the first set to down Cal Poluy's 77th-ranked Noah Berry. He lost to Middle Tennessee's #80 Stijn Slump 6-7(2); 6-7(2), and had no decision against Texas A&M's #38 Noah Schachter 0-6, 7-6(8), 1-1.
Barnett and Grear opened the season at the second doubles line and were 3-2 before moving to the first line. After dropping their first two matches at the top spot, they closed the year winning nine of their last 12 decisions (and were leading 5-4 in a 13th match). They were 2-1 vs. ranked doubles opponents, winning their last two against Texas A&M's #39 Trey Hilderbrand and Noah Schachter 6-3 and SMU's #66 Adam Neff and Kyle Sillman 7-5.
