
McCaffrey Named Owls MVP

Winners to be recognized at halfime of Blue-Gray Game
Luke McCaffrey was selected by his teammates as the winner of the George Martin Award as the MVP of the 2022 Rice Football team, one of 10 awards announced on Friday in advance of Saturday's Blue-Gray Spring Game.
McCaffrey enjoyed a standout season in his first year as a wide receiver. He led the Owls with 58 receptions and was second with 723 receiving yards and six touchdowns. He topped 100 yards three times, including a 10-catch, 171-yard effort at Louisiana Tech. He scored twice in the Owls' overtime win in Ruston and added a third touchdown on the ground to go with 31 yards rushing. His 171 receiving yards were the most for an Owl since 2013 and tied for the sixth-best total in school history.
Quarterback AJ Padgett, who took over as the Owls' starter in the final three games of 2022 was named the winner of the Joe F. Lipscomb award as the Owls top freshman. He threw for 634 yards and five touchdowns after making his debut in the second half of the UTSA game and then making starts in the season finale at North Texas and against Southern Miss in the LendingTree Bowl.
Defensive end Trey Schuman was selected as the winner of both the James W. Glanville Award for his combination of academic and athletic excellence and as the repeat winner of the "Bloody Joe" Davis Award which goes to the player whom most displays the competitive spirit of the legendary Rice assistant coach, rising above pain and injury to be the best player possible. He was named to his third CSC Academic All-District 7 team in 2022, graduating with a degree in Economics and Managerial Studies and posting a 3.78 GPA, and maintaining a 3.91 GPA in the Jones School MBA program. He was a two-time team captain for the Owls and a three-year despite battling injuries that kept him out of a starting role. He played in all 13 games in 2022 the regular season and posted a career-high four sacks.
Running back Juma Otoviano, lineman Shea Baker and receiver Bradley Rozner were named the winners of the George R. Brown Offensive Awards. Defensive end Ikenna Enechukwu, linebacker Myron Morrison and safety Gabriel Taylor were named the winners of the Jess Neely Defensive Awards.
All the winners of the 2022 awards will be honored at halftime of the Spring Game as will the winner of the O.J. Brigance Award which will be announced at halftime.
