Defeats #34 UTSA with sixth clinch point of the season
Freshman Santiago Navarro has earned his second Conference USA Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week of the spring dual season. The weekly awards are presented by Blenders Eyewear.
Navarro provided two crucial points in the Owls' 4-3 win over #34 UTSA on Saturday. He partnered with Campbell Salmon to break a 5-5 tie at the second doubles line and clinch the first point for Rice. In singles, he won a tiebreak in his first set to prevent the Roadrunners from sweeping all six opening sets and then won a second tiebreaker to break a 3-3 tie and give the Owls their highest-ranked win since 2017. After opening the year 0-7, he has won eight of his last 10 decisions.
This is the second time Navarro has been honored this spring. He was recognized after posting his first two career wins, including his first clinch point, in matches against Portland and New Mexico on the first weekend in March.
Navarro and the 59th-ranked Owls will take on No. 52 SMU on Saturday at Noon in the annual Turpin Cup match that will also serve as Senior Day as the Owls salute Wes Barnett, Dylan Heap, and Campbell Salmon. They wrap up the 2023 dual schedule on Tuesday with a 1 p.m. match with UAB. Rice will host the 2023 C-USA Men's Tennis Championship at the George R. Brown Tennis Center, on April 21-23.
