Owls Fall Late to UTSA in C-USA Quarterfinal

FRISCO – The third-seeded Rice women's basketball team fell late in the C-USA Quarterfinals to No. 6 UTSA 62-54 at the Ford Center at the Star Thursday afternoon.
India Bellamy led Rice with 14 points while adding nine rebounds, four blocks, two assists and a steal. Ashlee Austin was the only other double-digit scorer for the Owls with 10 points and four rebounds.
As a team, Rice shot 21-of-63 (33.3%) from the floor and 2-of-19 (10.5%) from three-point range. The Owls added a 10-of-13 showing from the free throw line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Katelyn Crosthwait opened the game with a jumper as Austin and Dominique Ennis followed to give the Owls a 6-0 lead to open the game. Following eight-straight points for UTSA, Jazzy Owens-Barnett drilled the game's first three to give Rice a 9-8 lead. The two sides traded baskets and free throws to close the quarter, with Rice leading 17-14.
Second Quarter
Owens-Barnett opened the second quarter with a layup, with Crosthwait and Shelby Hayes following as the Owls once again opened the quarter on a 6-0 run, forcing a Roadrunner timeout. Bellamy scored the next three baskets to give Rice a 29-14 lead, opening the quarter on a 12-0 run. After UTSA snapped the run with their own 5-0 run, Kennedy Clifton closed the quarter with a jumper as the Owls led 31-19 at the break.
Third Quarter
Following back-to-back layups by UTSA, Bellamy got the Owls offense going with a layup. After the Roadrunners cut the deficit to 33-25, Ennis drilled a three to give Rice an 11-point lead. UTSA continued to chip away, cutting the lead down to six, but Austin and Fisher hit back-to-back baskets to give Rice a 40-30 lead. The Owls led 42-34 at the end of the third.
Fourth Quarter
After trading baskets, Owens-Barnett's jumper put the Owls ahead 45-39 with 7:25 remaining. A quick 5-0 run cut the lead down to one, before Ennis extended the lead to three at 47-44. With Rice leading 47-46, Bellamy and Austin converted back-to-back baskets to give Rice a 51-46 lead with 3:35 remaining. After Crosthwait's free throw put Rice ahead 54-52 with 1:45 left, the Roadrunners ended the game on a 10-0 run to take a 62-54 win.
