EIght set to compete
While Arielle Hayon continues to train for next week's NCAA Swimming Championships, eight of her teammates will face off against swimmers from around the country at the 2023 CSCAA National Invitational Championship at the Elkhart Health and Aquatics Center in Elkhart, Indiana.
Shannon Campbell, Lily Cramer, Ella Dyson, Amelia Kane, Abigail King, Lauren McDougall, Imogen Meers and Megan Schultze will represent Rice in three-day event that begins on Thursday.
Zoe Spitz, who joined Hayon and Dyson in winning gold medals at the AAC Championships last month and was one of the top seeds in the backstroke events and backstroker Ava Hamblett were medical scratches and will miss the meet.
"We had to pull Zoe and Eva, so we are taking eight and will see what we can do," said Rice head coach Seth Huston. "Our distance girls (Campbell, Dyson and Kane) have a shot to swim all their races and the distance events could be pretty interesting. We have Imogen sprinting this whole meet. I'm adding the 50 (free) to Lauren's meet schedule and Lily Cramer is seeded pretty well in her events."
Thursday's schedule features the 50 back, 500 free, 50 fly, 200 IM, 50 breast, 50 free and 400 medley relay. Friday's lineup includes the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, and 800 free relay. Saturday's final day of competition includes the 1,650 free, 100 IM, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, and concludes with the 400 free relay.
Preliminaries begin at 9:30 each morning with finals each night at 6 p.m. Streaming links for each session will be available at the NIC Championship Central Page.
Created in 2014, the National Invitational Championship was created to serve a growing number of students wanting to participate in a national-level championship. Rice has competed in each championship and finished fifth in last year's event.
