Owls Close Strong at Victor Lopez Classic

HOUSTON – The Rice women's track and field team had a strong showing at the 40th annual Victor Lopez Classic at Rice University's Wendel D. Ley Track & Holloway Field.
Tara Simpson-Sullivan opened the women's competition with a victory in the hammer throw, her first title for the outdoor season, while Mckyla Van der Westhuizen took the javelin title in back-to-back meets. Caitlin Wosika was Rice's last event champion, taking the 5000 meter with Lina Spjut close behind in second.
Rice also had a great showing in the 1500 meter, with Alyssa Balandran, Taigen Hunter-Galvan and Amelie Attenborough going 2-3-4 for the event.
The Owls had 24 top-10 finishers with 16 placing in the top five.
