George R. Brown Tennis Center: Trinity Grear shook of a first-set tiebreaker loss to take command in the final sets to give Rice a 4-3 win over Cal Poly on Friday night.
Doubles: In what would prove to be an indication of what was in store for the entire match, the Owls took a hotly-contested doubles point with 7-5 and 6-4 wins at the first two lines while the third line was tied 5-5. They improved to 12-5 this season in capturing the first point of the match and
Singles: The opening sets of singles gave further evidence that the pursuit of the needed four points would not come easy. The teams split the six opening sets, three of which went to tiebreakers—two of them by the Owls. Emir Sendogan breeze to a 6-1 win in his first set, but quickly found himself down 4-1 in the second. He rallied to storm back and take his second set to give Rice a 2-0 lead and improve to 11-3 this season, one win shy of his final total from last year when he finished 12-9 I duals. The Mustangs countered with a win at the fourth line, but freshman Kabeer Kapasi leveraged the momentum of winning his first set tiebreaker to win 6-0 in his second set to put Rice up 3-1. Cal Poly picked up its second point when Wes Barnett, who had won his first set tiebreaker and was tied 3-3 in the second, was forced to retire with an injury and then tied the match with a win at the fifth line. That left the match to be decided at the first line where Grear had opened with a loss in the tiebreaker and then force a third set with a 6-4 win. He was up a break at 3-2 in the third and then ran the table to clinch the night for the Owls.
Up Next: The Owls will face William & Mary on Sunday at 11 a.m. as part of a combined dual with the Rice women, who will host #57 Brown.
