Slow Start Dooms Owls Against UTSA

SAN ANTONIO – The Rice women's basketball team couldn't overcome an early deficit on the road as the Owls fell 66-53 to UTSA at the Convocation Center Thursday night.
Ashlee Austin led the way for Rice with 17 points while adding five rebounds and three assists. Destiny Jackson added 13 points, three rebounds and two assists while Katelyn Crosthwait finished with 12 points and three rebounds.
As a team Rice shot 17-of-49 (34.7%) and 8-of-19 (42.1%), while also going 11-of-15 (73.3%) from the free throw line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
UTSA opened the game on a 10-0 run before India Bellamy's free throw snapped the run. The Roadrunners ballooned the lead to 18-1 before Jackson hit Rice's first field goal in the game with a layup. Crosthwait followed with a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 12, but UTSA was able to close the quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 23-6 lead.
Second Quarter
Austin got the Owls going in the second with an old fashioned three-point play with a layup and foul. The Roadrunners responded with a run, taking a 32-12 lead with 5:42 left. Bellamy sparked a run with a pair of free throws and a layup, with Austin cutting the lead down to 13 with a three. The two were able to bring Rice within 10, but a layup in the closing seconds gave UTSA a 34-22 lead at the break.
Third Quarter
Jackson got the Owls going in third, cutting the lead down to 10 before UTSA responded with a 7-0 run to extend their lead back to 17 points. Austin answered with a three while Bellamy followed with a layup as the Owls looked to claw back. Crosthwait and Jackson both drilled threes to get the Owls within nine at 35-44, but the Roadrunners kept finding ways to score to put the pressure back on Rice. Jackson hit a layup as time expired to bring Rice within eight at 48-40 headed into the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter
After trading scorers, Jackson brought Rice within five at 51-46 with seven minutes remaining. A quick 8-0 run for the Roadrunners halted all of Rice's momentum, as UTSA was able to close out the game for the victory.

The Owls will continue their road trip Saturday when the team faces Western Kentucky at 1:00 p.m.
