HOUSTON – The Rice women's basketball team opened the 2023-24 season with the team's first official practice Monday afternoon as the Owls enter year three of the Lindsay Edmonds era.
Rice has 11 Owls returning from last season, including All-C-USA Second Team selection Malia Fisher. Fisher was second on the team with 11.8 points per game while leading the team with 6.3 rebounds per game. Destiny Jackson is also back for a fifth season with the Owls after averaging 10.6 points per game last season.
The Owls have four newcomers this season, with two freshman, Pace Rickard and Layla Conley, while adding two transfers in Emily Klaczek (UAB) and Sussy Ngulefac (Samford). Ngulefac arrives to South Main after leading the SoCon in field goal percentage in her first two seasons with the Samford Bulldogs. Klaczek joins the Owls after shooting 41% from the floor and 40.6% from three last year with UAB.
Edmonds, in her first two season with the Owls, has achieved the best win percentage in the first two seasons (.627), most wins in first two seasons (37), the most wins in a head coaches second season (23) and is one of two Rice WBB head coaches to open their career with back-to-back winning seasons.
The Owls saw the best start in program history a season ago at 9-0, featuring back-to-back-to-back wins at Texas A&M, vs. TCU and vs. Houston. The team is coming off a WNIT Second Round appearance after defeating BYU on the road in the opening round.
Rice will host Angelo State for an exhibition on Nov. 1 before opening the season against Houston Christian at Tudor Fieldhouse on Nov. 6 at 7 p.m.
Season tickets are on sale now and are $75 for general admission and can be purchased by calling 713-348-OWLS (6957) or by clicking here.
