Down Elon in home opener
In Brief: Rice opened its 2023 men's tennis home schedule with a 4-3 win over Elon at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Friday.
The Details: While the Owls played their fifth 4-3 match in six contests this spring, this match was without the drama of the outcome being in doubt until the final match of the day. Rice took a 4-0 lead to secure the win before the Phoenix grabbed the last three points of the day.
Doubles: Kabeer Kapasi and Eduardo Morais gave the Owls the early advantage with a 6-2 win at the third line. Wes Barnett and Trinity Grear then closed out the point with a 6-4 win at the second line.
Singles: Unlike the previous four matches where the Owls followed a win in doubles by dropping at least four first singles sets, They split the openers and then held the advantage on those three courts to close out the win in rapid fashion. Barnett swiftly added the second point with a 6-1, 6-1, win. Emir Sendogan did not drop a game in his first set and improved to 6-0 this season with a 6-0, 6-3 win. Grear followed shortly after with the clincher, winning 6-2, 6-3 at the second line.
Efe Ustundag: " It was nice to see Eduardo step in at three doubles and then get off the court quickly and I was happy about the fact that the guys who took first sets finished them out. Wes just rolled over his guy, Emir falls behind 3-2 in the second but then wins four straight. Trinity was 3-3 and then got a break and closed it out. I felt like we did a great job of keeping the pressure on and never gave them a chance to look at the scoreboard and see a chance to come back. We've got a really strong schedule coming up with two SEC schools (LSU at home and at Vanderbilt) around a top-25 team (Middle Tennessee). I'm really looking forward to the next couple of weeks."
Up Next Rice (3-3) will host LSU on February 4 at 11 a.m. as part of a combined dual match with the Rice women's team who will face #4 Texas A&M.
