Soccer Defeats UTSA, 2-1, in Conference USA Opener
9/14/2022 10:28:00 PM | Women's Soccer
San Antonio, Texas — Delaney Schultz scored two goals in the first 10 minutes and the Rice Soccer team held on in its Conference USA opener, defeating UTSA, 2-1, at the Park West Athletics Complex.
The Details
Rice wasted no time getting on the board as Serena Pham got the ball to Grace Collins down the left side of the field. Collins then sent a cross toward the front of the net where Delaney Schultz headed it in for her first goal of the season. Schultz got her third career brace just seven minutes later when she converted Pham's corner kick. UTSA came close in the 29th minute when a shot by Olivia Alvarez from inside the six rang off the crossbar. But the Roadrunners broke through the 41st minute when Marlee Fray corralled the ball in front of the net and slid it past Bella Killgore, cutting the Rice lead to 2-1 at the half.
Play slowed down in the second half as neither team could get any offense going. In the 61st minute, the Roadrunners got the first shot of the half when Sarina Russ' attempt was off target. The only shot on goal came in the 77th minute when UTSA's Kiran Singh, from just outside the box, turned and sent a shot toward the bottom right corner of the net. But Killgore stood tall, making the save and securing the victory.
What Head Coach Brian Lee Had to Say
"It was a great overall team performance. All 20 players contributed on and off the field. We had a wonderful start to get us going in the first 15-20 minutes of the game. It was good getting the three points to start the conference season."
