Third straight Defensive Player of Week for McCardell
DALLAS – The Rice Owls volleyball team was recognized for their 4-0 performance last week with Ellie Bichelmeyer and Nia McCardell earning the Conference USA Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Rice (8-1) capped off an undefeated week by defeating the previously unbeaten Texas Tech Red Raiders in five set to win the Rice Adidas Invitational I tournament.
Bichelmeyer, a native of Mission Hills, Kansas, earned her first career C-USA weekly honor by amassing 44 kills across 13 sets (3.38 kps) on 84 attacks for a staggering .452 hitting percentage. Bichelmeyer posted double-figure kills in three of the four matches, including 14 kills in Rice's thrilling victory over Texas Tech. The C-USA Preseason Team selectee also had 12 kills (.524) in a sweep over Brown and 11 kills (.647) in a straight sets win against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. In total, she collected 47.0 points for the week.
McCardell became just the third player in league history to win a third consecutive C-USA Defensive Player of the Week award, joining Charlotte's Amani McArthur (2020-21) and WKU's Sydney Engle (2017). The Missouri City, Texas native put together a historic performance in Rice's win over Texas Tech, collecting a career-high 36 digs to tie former Owl Nicci Yarber (1989) for the third-most digs in a single match in program history. Ranked ninth in the NCAA this season in digs per set (5.45) and first in C-USA, McCardell totaled 87 digs across 14 sets for the week (6.2 per set).
The Owls continue their season-long seven match homestand this weekend when they welcome in Kansas State (Friday, Sept. 16-6 p.m.) and nationally ranked Creighton (Sunday-Sept. 18-1 p.m.) as part of the Rice Adidas Invitational II tournament.
