HOUSTON – Rice women's basketball second-year head coach Lindsay Edmonds announced the Owls' 2022-23 season schedule on Thursday, a slate that includes seven games against teams who qualified for postseason play last season.
The Owls will play a total of 29 games, which includes 15 contests at Tudor Fieldhouse.
"I'm really excited to announce our non-conference and conference schedule for the 2022-23 season," Edmonds said. "We have really challenged ourselves with our non-conference schedule. We will face conference champions and WBI champions, Top-100 RPI opponents, and Power 5's. I'm really looking forward to see not only where we stack up against those teams but also for the opportunity to blend in our seven newcomers and nine returners. We're hoping to be battle-tested before we get into the tough conference play of C-USA."
Following a home exhibition against Texas College on Nov. 5, the Owls tip-off the non-conference season at home on Nov. 10 against the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks, who went 28-5 and qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season.
After a home tilt against Abilene Christian (Nov. 13), the Owls play four consecutive road games starting with a pair on the West Coast at Saint Mary's College (Nov. 16) and Pacific (Nov. 19) in California. Rice's final two non-conference road contests will be at Texas Southern (Nov. 23) and Texas A&M (Nov. 27).
The Owls welcome in TCU to Tudor Fieldhouse on Dec. 2 before hosting crosstown rival Houston (WNIT participant) on Dec. 10. Rice concludes their non-conference season on Dec. 16 against the Sam Houston Bearkats.
C-USA adjusted this season's conference format to a new 20-game regular season format in which all 11 programs will play each other twice.
Prior to the Christmas break Rice opens the C-USA season on Dec. 20 with a noon tip-off against Middle Tennessee in the first of two meetings with the Lady Raiders. The Owls travel to Murfreesboro a few weeks late on Jan. 11.
Rice's remaining conference opponents will be WKU (home Dec. 29/away Feb. 18), UTEP (home Dec. 31/away Jan. 14), Louisiana Tech (away Jan. 5/home Feb. 2), UTSA (home Jan. 16/away Feb. 16), North Texas (home Jan. 19/away Feb. 4), Charlotte (away Jan. 26/home Feb. 25), UAB (away Jan. 28/home Feb. 23), Florida Atlantic (home Feb. 9/away Mar. 2), and FIU (home Feb. 11/away Mar. 4).
The C-USA Championship returns to Frisco, Texas at the Ford Center at The Star from Mar. 8-11.
A short-handed and inexperienced Rice team went 14-13 under Edmonds last season, finishing the season with momentum by winning seven of their final nine games. The Owls now boast a full roster in 2022-23 with seven newcomers to add to a squad with all-conference honorees such as senior forward Ashlee Austin, sophomore forward Malia Fisher and senior guard Destiny Jackson.
