Cougars Take Silver Glove with 8-2 Win

Owls head to Charlotte this weekend
Schroeder Park: Houston exploded for four unearned runs in the third inning and never looked back, downing Rice 8-2 on Wednesday night and capturing the 2022 Silver Glove Series.
The Details: Rice looked to take early control of the gates, loading the bases in the top of the first with one out, but a wild throw from second on an attempted double play went from plating a pair of runs to completing the double play when Nathan Becker was ruled to have interfered with Brandon Burckel's throw to first. Rice freshman Parker Smith made his first start since March 26, set the Cougars down on 10 pitches in the bottom of the first. After missing out on their opportunity in the first, the Owls took advantage in the second when Manny Garza lined a ball to center and the Cougars' Malachi Lott attempted to make a diving catch. The ball rolled to the wall and Garza wound up at third and came home on a sacrifice fly by Benjamin Rosengard. Houston responded with a run off Smith in the bottom of the second and then erupted for four runs after the Owls retired the first two Cougars in the third. Trailing 5-2 in the sixth, Garza collected his second extra base hit of the game, driving in Becker with a looping double to left. Rice threatened in the seventh, putting a pair on with one out but could not score and Houston put the game on ice with a pair of runs in the eighth.

Notable:
- The win was the third straight for the Cougars in the series.
- Smith worked two innings and struck out a pair of 29 pitchers.
- Micah Davis worked a season-high two innings and did not allow a hit while striking out a pair.
- Garza has hit in five of six starts (7x13) after missing 30 games with an injury. He's hit for a cycle of sorts in his last three starts, collecting his first career home run on 4/29 vs. WKU along with a double and picked up his first career triple against Houston tonight.
- Pierce Gallo reached base three times with a single and a pair of walks and stole his team-leading eighth base. He has five steals in the last three games.
