DALLAS – Rice women's basketball guard Katelyn Crosthwait has been named one of 14 Conference USA Winter Spirit of Service Award winners, the league announced on Thursday (April 7).
C-USA's Spirit of Service Award is given to one student-athlete from all 14 member schools and is presented three times throughout the year. The honor recognizes student-athletes with significant community service endeavors, good academic standing, and participation in their sport.
Before suffering a season-ending injury, Crosthwait was averaging 9.1 points through nine games and was the Owls lone returning starter from last season's WNIT championship team. Thus far in her Rice career, Crosthwait has played 58 games making 35 starts.
The Purcell, Oklahoma native, who sports a 3.70 GPA while majoring in Psychological Sciences and Spot Management, is a three-time member of the C-USA Academic Honor Roll and is a two-time Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar qualifier, as well as a two-time member of the Rice University President's Honor Roll.
Crosthwait has volunteered her time with the License to Eat program, a group of competitive athletes that raised money for the homeless. The group prepared lunch bags to personally hand out and interact with the homeless community in Houston.
In addition, Crosthwait volunteered her time with the Nora's Home, an organization that assists families on the transplant list. The home helps families through a variety of ways; food, entertainment, affordable housing, and support that the families really need.
Crosthwait assisted with the golf classic, a city of Houston brochure, and trivia nights. Crosthwait helped raise the most money in this year's tournament compared to previous years. She provided a resource for them to use and easily accessible in order for them to navigate their temporary home in hopes of a transplant. The group held virtual trivia nights for the families and children, helping provide an escape.
