In Brief: Rice freshman Arielle Hayon will close out a memorable first season of collegiate swimming this weekend when she competes in a pair of events at the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Details: Hayon will make her NCAA debut competing in the 100-yard butterfly preliminaries on Friday morning which begin at 9 a.m. (central) with the 400 IM. The 100 fly is the second event of the morning and the first heat is scheduled to begin at 9:33 and Hayon, who is seeded 20th in the 100 fly thanks to 51.88 clocking on her way to a Conference USA record three weeks ago at the C-USA Championship, will swim in the sixth heat in lane one. She won the 100 fly title at the CSCAA National Invitational last weekend. Hayon is seeded 45th in the 200 fly, thanks to her school-record time of 1:57.13 on her way to a second gold medal at the C-USA Championships.
Flying Owls: Hayon is the 17th Owl to qualify for the NCAA Championship and the first since Marie-Claire Schillinger in 2019. She is the third to compete in the 100 fly, joining 2021 Rice Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Cory Teague and Casey Clark. Teague earned All-American honors in the event in both 1997 and 1998. Clark, who competed in both butterfly events as well as the 200 free in 2013, held the Rice butterfly standards until eclipsed by Hayon.
