Huang Rallies Rice Past Utah State
2/26/2022 9:01:00 PM | Men's Tennis
Face USF Sunday at 10 a.m.
In Brief: With no room to spare, Haoyuan Huang won five consecutive games to win a thrilling three-set match and give Rice a 4-3 win over Utah State in the second day of action at Arizona State's eight team event in Tempe, Arizona on Saturday.
Doubles: USU took the early advantage with a win at the first line, but in much the same fashion as they did against Arizona State, Rice's second and third lines ground out wins to take the point.
Singles: Rice took four of six first sets of singles but Utah State fought back and the lead was traded back and forth before it came down to Huang's match at one. Campbell Salmon gave Rice a 2-0 lead with a quick win at six, but USU tied it with wins at two and four. Trinity Grear ground out a tiebreaker win at five to put Rice back in front, but the Aggies tied it at 3 and appeared to be headed to victory when Huang fell down 5-2. But the freshman from Shanghai, China who only joined the Owls this spring, felt the full effect of the team element of college tennis as he rallied to win five straight games and be mobbed by his teammates after the final point.
Up Next: Rice closes out the weekend by facing South Florida at 10 a.m. on Sunday. They return home to host Texas A&M Corpus Christi on March 6.
