Snap Tiger's fie-match winning streak
In Brief: Rice came up with the key points to take the early lead in doubles and then held the advantage in singles to take a 4-0 win over LSU at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Sunday, snapping a five-match winning streak for the Tigers over the Owls.
Doubles: Maria Budin and Diae El Jardi made an early statement by sprinting to a 6-0 win at the first line, but the clinching point was in doubt until late. While the third line was tied 5-5, Anastasia Smirnova and Allison Zipoli averted a similar score by winning the deuce point to take their match 6-4 and stake Rice to a 1-0 lead.
Singles: Rice immediately extended the lead to 2-0 when LSU's Maggie Cubitt had to withdraw from her singles match. Rice took four of the five first singles sets and Budin and Zipoli maintained their advantage to deliver the final two clinching points.
Elizabeth Schmidt: "We came out with good focus and play on all 3 courts in doubles. #1 did a nice job closing their match out once they got the big lead and winning that deuce point at 5-4 at #2 was clutch. Came out again in singles with good focus and getting those 4 first sets helped keep LSU on their heels. But as you would expect from a team like LSU they kept fighting, made the 2nd sets closer on those courts, and really made us earn it. Proud of the team for stepping up and earning the victory"
Up Next: The Owls will be home next Friday to host UTSA at 11 a.m. and then head to take on Texas A&M in College Station the following day.
