Owls Looking for Weekend Sweep, Host FIU
Rice will be looking for their second straight win on Saturday when they host the FIU Panthers in the lone meeting between the two schools this season. The Owls are currently in sixth place in the C-USA West division, 1.5 games behind UTEP (Rice holds head-to-head) to avoid the play-in game at the C-USA Championship. FIU is also in sixth place in the C-USA East division and are just 2-7 on the road, including six straight losses outside of Miami. The Owls are 6-6 this season at Tudor Fieldhouse.
Scouting FIU
The Panthers have dropped four of their last five games, including a 63-49 loss at Middle Tennessee on Thursday. Grad transfer Ariel Colon leads FIU in scoring (12.9 ppg) while fellow grad transfer Kyla Nelson ranks second in C-USA in three-pointers made (53) and three-point percentage (35.3).
Last Time Out
The Owls used a diverse and efficient offense to earn an impressive 81-76 home victory over the UAB Blazers Thursday evening. Rice totaled their second-most points in a Conference USA game this season by shooting an in-conference play season-best 49.2 percent (30-of-61) from the field with a 15-to-10 assist to turnover ratio and a 7-of-12 (58.3 percent) performance from three-point territory. The Owls had three players score in double-figures, led by 22 points from Ashlee Austin.
Bokunewicz Finding Her Groove
Redshirt freshman wing Maya Bokunewicz poured in 19 points and grabbed a career-high 8 rebounds while playing all 40 minutes last time out vs. UAB, making 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. After tearing her ACL in training camp last year and losing the entire season, Bokunewicz has bounced back and currently leads all of C-USA in three-point percentage (.354) and three-pointers made per game (2.55) during league play. In addition, Bokunewicz leads all of C-USA in minutes played per game (38.7) in conference action and has played 40+ minutes five times.
DJ Stuffing the Stat Sheet
In her first full season as the Owls starting point guard, Destiny Jackson has made an immediate impact and now currently leads C-USA in assists per game (4.4) during league play. Jackson scored a career-high 17 points against UAB on Thursday and also dished out a career-high nine assists. In addition, Jackson ranks 12th among all C-USA players in rebounding (6.2) during the C-USA season.
