Owls Debut State-of-the-Art Pitching Lab
Rice Baseball has taken a quantum leap forward in the development and refinement of pitching talent with the opening of a state-of-the-art training center at Reckling Park.
Thanks to a lead gift from Jeremy '97 and Melinda Thigpen along with several other supporters of the program, the "Pigpen" Pitching Lab incorporates specific technologies and hardware to compile measurable biomechanical data on each Rice pitcher. The lab is located under the leftfield stands at Reckling Park in an area originally used as an indoor batting area.
The data generated will be continuously analyzed by the coaching, sports medicine, and strength and conditioning staff to enhance the performance of each student-athlete and reduce the risk of injury.
The key components of the lab include:
Owls' new pitching coach Colter Bostick added "The Pigpen is going to be seen as the best pitching development lab in the country because we have the capability to make our guys better on every single pitch they throw."
The debut of the Pigpen Pitching Lab aligns with the goal to 'improve athletics competitiveness by optimizing performance through a holistic, scientific approach" outlined in the "Vision for Victory" strategic plan.
The Owls will open their 2022 season on February 18 in Austin against the University of Texas and open their 2022 home season on February 25 against the Lamar Cardinals.
