Owls win three events at FasTrak Collegiate Challenge
HOUSTON - The Rice Owls women's track & field team shook off some rust at Saturday's season-opening FasTrak Collegiate Challenge meet, winning a total of four events along with a new school record.
Sophomore All-American thrower Tara Simpson-Sullivan picked up where she left off in the summer by breaking her own school record in the weight throw, placing second overall. The Penrith, England native bested her own school record with a mark of 21.32m on her fifth attempt on Saturday to finish behind Texas State's Alyssa Wilson (22.26m). Simpson-Sullivan's previous school record was 19.45m from the 2020 season and her new throw ranks 11th in the NCAA this indoor season.
The Owls picked up another victory in the throws department in the shot put as Erna Gunnarsdottir won her sixth career indoor shot put event with a winning mark of 16.90m on her very first attempt.
Freshman Arayna Mickles, who competed in three total events on Saturday, won the long jump with a distance of 5.88m on her third attempt, good enough for fourth in Conference USA this season. Sophomore distance runner Caitlin Wosika also gave the Owls a win in the mile (5:01.54).
