Look to defend title
Rice will be out to defend its title on Friday when four Owls compete in the fifth CSCAA Collegiate National Open Water Championships in Lawrence, Kansas.
Shannon Campbell, Shannon Jelley, Amelia Kane and Sydney Morgan will be among the 70 swimmers who will race on Lone Star Lake. The women's race begins at 8:30 a.m. with the men's division beginning at 10 a.m. The 5,000-meter (3.1 miles) event is sponsored by College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) and hosted by the University of Kansas.
Jelley (12th) and Campbell (14th) were members of the Owls' 2019 squad that captured the team title which is determined by the combined finish of the first three swimmers from each school.
Rice head coach Seth Huston said that multiple factors come into play for the competitors.
"Unlike when you are in the pool, open water racing really comes down to how you handle the environment, the conditions, how you navigate the course. You can outswim someone who may be faster in the pool if it's your day."
The Owls have competed in the event in each year since it began in 2016. They were the runners up in the first three years before capturing the title in 2019. The 2020 event was canceled due to the pandemic.
Rice will open its 2021-22 meet schedule on October 15 when they host Houston for the first of two days of racing at the Rice Competition Pool.
